Benefits

Top

• The courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

• The courses are independent of all manufacturers and focus primarily on the skills to do the job.

• For installation companies wishing to gain Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) membership, PPL offer the complete route from general renewable energy awareness, through to installation of renewable technologies and training for MCS’s Quality Assurance systems, by PPL’s MCS Made Simple course.

Hints & Tips

What is MCS?

Microgeneration Certification Scheme or MCS is a national scheme which accredits both installers and manufacturers of renewable energy systems such as Solar Photovoltaic, Solar Hot Water, Heat Pumps and Biomass. Membership of the scheme is mandatory if an installer wishes to offer the Governments Renewable Energy Incentive schemes to their customers. The installer must only use renewable energy products which have been accredited by MCS.

Membership of the MCS gives the installer opportunity to offer both the UK Government’s lucrative Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed In Tariffs (FITs) to their customers. PPL make joining the MCS even easier with their 1 day MCS Made Simple™ course. The course provides a complete MCS compatible quality assurance manual and uses training in an affordable 1 day course.

How to become MCS Accredited?

Joining MCS is a 5 stage process:

Step 1

Attend an accredited training course for the technology you wish to install (e.g. Solar Thermal Hot Water, Heat Pumps or Solar Photovoltaic). You will also have to undertake and prerequisite qualifications required such as Unvented Hot Water for Solar Thermal or Heat Pumps and 17th Edition Wiring Regulations for Solar PV.

Please see the individual course page for more details.

Step 2

Choose a MCS to join.

see www.ppltraining.co.uk/mcs for a selection of MCS scheme operators and their contact details.

Step 3

MCS is not just about assessing installation skills, installation companies are required to operate an update-to-date Quality Assurance System. Installers wishing to gain MCS membership should consider undertaking the City & Guilds Accredited MCS Made Simple course. This course provides a complete MCS compatible Quantity Assurance system and documentation, plus training on how to operate it .

Step 4

Install your first system!

Step 5

Assessment on 1st system and review of MCS Quality Assurance system. This ½ day visit by a MCS assessor will check your 1st install and QA system.
